ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) -- A 14-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon on Veirs Mill Road near Twinbrook Shopping Center in Montgomery County. He is currently in critical condition with head trauma, but police said on Thursday night that he will survive.
Family friends say the teen hit by the car is named John and an incoming freshman at Rockville High School. Described as cool, funny, and outgoing, sources say he is very popular around the Twinbrook neighborhood.
Montgomery County police say the accident is still under investigation, but an eyewitness tells ABC7 that the driver of the car was speeding. The driver declined to speak with us.
Local residents say this stretch of Veirs Mill Road can be chaotic, and police say that with school starting in Montgomery County next week, they hope this is a wake up call.
"They have to do something for safety, especially for the kids and even adults too," says Rockville resident Indika Jayadilake.
"I used to cross the street," says Jean Lanier, a friend of the victim. "Now I'm going to use the crosswalk because I don't want to be in that situation."
No arrests or charges have been made yet.
