NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (WJLA) - Prince George's County is on the precipice of a big economic boost, and it's coming just in time for the busy holiday shopping season.
A new Tanger Outlet mall is slated to open Friday near National Harbor, and its arrival is likely to be a boon for the economy and regional shoppers.
As opening day approaches, the area around Oxon Hill Road - just two miles from National Harbor - is buzzing with activity. It's the first outlet mall of its kind in Prince George's County, hosting 90 high-end shops.
The situation, as described by General Manager Christi Wallace, is "organized chaos," as stores scramble to put the finishing touches on the complex. Officials expect up to 40,000 people to descend on the mall on opening day.
With those extra people come extra cars, though, and local residents are curious to see how an influx of approximately 20,000 extra vehicles affects traffic in the area.
As such, a team of Prince George's County Police officers gathered on bicycles a few blocks from the outlets to review traffic plans. Electronic signs have been installed to help direct flow and portable cameras will be ready to monitor traffic.
"We are ready and we have worked with state officials and local police departments to make sure we have a plan in place for the ease of our customers," Wallace said.
Shuttle buses will also run from nearby parking lots to bring shoppers to and from the complex.
