      Suspicious package closes Pennsylvania Avenue in NW

      UPDATE (9:34 a.m.): Capitol Police are preparing to transport the suspicious package to Quantico, where it will be "rendered safe."

      The package was loaded onto a specialized truck by a bomb squad. The area remains closed.

      ORIGINAL STORY: U.S. Capitol Police are investigating a suspicious package in Northwest, which has prompted the closure{ }of roads, including Pennsylvania Avenue, in the area.

      The package, located in the 100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, is described as a small metal pipe with end caps and wires sticking out of it, officials say.

      Police have shut down First Street between Garfield Circle to Constitution Avenue in Northwest and Pennsylvania Avenue between First Street and Third Street in Southeast.
