Police search for suspect in deadly Hyattsville stabbing
Witnesses say a fight that led to a deadly stabbing in Hyattsville may have been sparked over a pair of expensive shoes.
Witnesses told ABC7 they thought it was just a brawl between young adults on America Boulevard in Hyattsvile.
“Me and a couple co-workers saw them fighting and thought it wasn't anything serious then we saw what was happening,” said Dominique Felder.
Five people were stabbed, one fatally. Police identified the killed man as 21-year-old Leonard Smith-Matthews of the 5100 block of Kenilworth Avenue in Hyattsville. He died at the hospital.
Four others suffered non-life threatening injuries. There’s no word on what led to the fight or the stabbings.
Witnesses tell ABC7 they later heard the violence broke out over a pair of trendy shoes. The colorful foamposits, are a highly-prized status symbol in some quarters.
The fight broke out at the University Town Center, located in the 6500 block of America Boulevard, around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Prince George’s county police are searching for suspects in a deadly stabbing at a Hyattsville shopping center. They have not yet made an arrest.
Smith's friends gathered at the scene to grieve.
“It's crazy these kids fight like that over a pair of shoes,” Felder said.
