(WJLA) - An armed man reaching for his gun was shot and killed early Saturday morning by a Prince George's County Police officer who had responded to shots fired in Capitol Heights.
When two officers arrived about 4:00 a.m. at Marlboro Pike at Lee Jay Drive, they saw a man leaving the area on foot. They thought he was injured because he was hunched over, holding his stomach, police spokesperson Julie Parker says. The officers didn't know the man was armed until they were about 20 feet from him.
As they approached him, one officer saw the suspect was reaching for a handgun in his waistband.
The officer shot the suspect multiple times. The man was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center.
Police later identified the deceased suspect as 24-year-old Robert Antonio Jones, of the 2700 block of Lorring Drive in Forestville.
The involved officer is identified as Police Officer Brian Newcomer, a nine-year law enforcement veteran. He has been placed on on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Neither officer was injured.
The suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.
