Several lines of powerful thunderstorms made their way through the DC region Sunday afternoon and evening, causing damage in some spots.
Heavy winds from the storms caused a major headache for drivers on Route 17 in Fauquier County. A two-mile section north of Warrenton was shut down for hours after trees and power lines fell on the highway in two different spots.
An officer told ABC7 a tree had hit a car on Route 17 as well. Fortunately the damage was minimal and there were no serious injuries.
In the area where 17 was shut down, there weren't many alternative routes that didn't involve drivers having to go miles out of their way. A volunteer firefighter from The Plains offered directions to help those who didn't know where to go.
In Bethesda, in the 9100 block of Seven Locks Road, there is a trail of storm debris. At one home, lightning struck a tree and damaged a roof and car.
