Sterling Costco shooting: Loudoun sheriff's deputy hurt, woman killed
A woman who authorities say threatened Loudoun County Sheriff's deputies with a knife and scissors was fatally shot by deputies at a Sterling Costco store.
The suspect has been identified as Mhai Scott, 38, of Sterling, Virginia.
The Costco store will reopen Thursday at 9am.
The shooting happened at the store, which is located at 21398 Price Cascades Plaza, at about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Two deputies had been called to respond to a disorderly conduct complaint that the woman was wielding a knife and scissors and threatening employees at the store.
Loudoun Sheriff Michael Chapman says the woman, who was involved in food preparation, became agitated and alarmed workers. Police say she went at the deputies with the weapons and the officers tried to detain her with a county-issued TASER.
When the TASER was unable to stop the woman, one of the deputies then shot the woman multiple times.
One of the deputies suffered a gunshot wound to his leg, possibly from a ricochet. He was taken to a local hospital and has since been released in good condition, police say.
Several witnesses said the woman was handing out pizza samples before the shooting when she started acting strangely.
