(WJLA) - The emotions are still raw for Melissa Brace and her family after learning her mother was found dead at home on Sunday night.
Lynne Mercer, 58, had worked as a nurse for nearly 30 years. She spent about a decade of her career at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is described as kind, giving and compassionate – always being there for families and their loved ones.
But Spotsylvania County deputies got a call from her employer on Sunday night around 11:30 p.m., when she didn’t show up for her shift that started at 7 p.m. Mercer had always shown up to work on time, and when deputies arrived to do a welfare check at her residence, they noticed her vehicle was still there.
They say the door was left open, and that by the time deputies went inside her home here off of Eastridge Way, they found the grandmother of 10 lifeless on the floor.
Brenda Grady has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 40 years.
“She seemed like a nice person…I never thought something like that would happen here,” she said.
Deputies here say they are treating her death as a homicide, but with so many unanswered questions as to who could have done this and why, her family now hopes someone who saw or talked to her that day can provide the one clue that can help investigators piece it all together.
The family has asked for privacy while they grieve.
