A Spotsylvania County detective interrupted a robbery in progress and shot a scissors-wielding man who had been threatening a store clerk.

At about 2:55 p.m., Thursday, the detective was coming on duty and stopped at the Dollar General store{}for personal items at 956 Bragg Road near Fredericksburg, according to Captain Mike Harvey of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

As he came to the door, the detective saw a man holding something to the back of the clerk, demanding she open the drawer, and saying, "Get it open, get it open!"

The detective identified himself from outside the store and the suspect left the store. The detective thought the suspect was holding a knife and ordered him to drop it.

When the suspect didn't drop his weapon, the detective grabbed the suspect and tried to force him to drop the weapon, which turned out to be a pair of scissors.

A struggle began. Fearing he would be stabbed with the scissors, the detective fired one shot from his service pistol hitting the suspect in the leg, Harvey said.

As the detective was putting handcuffs on him, the suspect continued to struggle.

Backup support came from additional Spotsylvania units as well as Fredericksburg Police Department and Fredericksburg Sheriff's Office, Harvey said.

The suspect was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he was treated and released. The detective was treated by rescue on scene.

The suspect was identified as Lexy Clay Dove Sr., 48 of Orange County. He was charged with Attempted Robbery, Assault on the store clerk, and assault on law enforcement. Dove was jailed under no bond.
