RESTON, Va. (WJLA) - Sometime over the weekend, vandals struck two brand new $1.4 million turf fields at South Lakes High school in Reston.
Both the stadium field and the community field tarps now cover what someone spray painted: Obscene versions of the Seahawk name, profanity and sexually explicit images.
The fields were just put in over the summer. Much of the $1.4 million was raised by the community, with some parent groups even taking out loans they are still paying back.
"It was hard enough to raise that money let alone worry about how we're going to pay for repairs,” says parent Judy Boyer.
Students say they were looking forward to playing on turf.
"With the rain last year, a lot of games got canceled so basically with the turf, we can keep on schedule,” says student Gabriel Davis.
But this is not how they thought they'd kick off the new school year.
"People are really emotional about it. It's a new turf field - we haven't even had it for a week and it's already gotten damaged,” says student Matt Crump.
