Snow plow driver killed by VDOT truck in Ashburn

(WJLA) - A snow plow driver contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation to help clear snow from roadways was killed Thursday when another VDOT truck hit him.

The contract driver had pulled his truck off to the right side of Belmont Ridge Road in Ashburn near its intersection with Chesterton Street. He had exited the cab of his truck and was standing at its rear near the salt spreader when he was struck by a VDOT dump truck. The driver was transported to Loudoun Hospital Center where he died.

"We don't think how important it is for these guys to get out there do these things for us until something like this happens,” says Marshall Harris.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. VDOT officials said they were withholding the driver's identity until his family could be notified.
