Smithsonian parking thefts, Abeselom Hailemariam sentencing
A 33-year-old Alexandria man has been sentenced for his role in a conspiracy to steal close to $1.4 million from the Smithsonian Institution's Steve F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
Abeselom Hailemariam was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
That is in addition to the approximately $1.4 million he has been orded to pay in restitution.
From, March 2009 to August 2012, Hailemariam worked as the full time location manager at the Steve F. Udvar-Hazy Center's parking lot.
In that time, he also successfully managed a scheme which stole atleast $1,383,195 from the Smithsonian and its visitors.
With Hailemariam's approval, parking lot booth attendants unplugged electronic vehicle counters, and withheld parking ticket stubs. They kept the money given to them by customers for parking and divied the money up among themselves.
