Smithsonian Fossil Hall closes to public for long-planned $48 million renovations

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - The Fossil Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History closed Sunday to the public as officials prepare the hall for what's being called long-overdue renovations.

The Washington Post reports the $48 million renovations will occur over the next five years with the hall expected to reopen in 2019.

More than 2,000 specimens will be disassembled beginning Monday and prepared for exhibit while the rest of the items in the museum such as the Hope Diamond will remain on display during the renovation.
