Similar Craigslist ads lure victims to armed robberies in Severn, Md.

SEVERN, Md. (WJLA) - Anne Arundel County police are investigating two robberies in Severn in the past two weeks related to a Craigslist post advertising a dirt bike for sale.

On Sunday, May 11 officers responded to the area of Severn Elementary School at 838 Reece Road for a report of an attempted armed robbery and shooting.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with two victims who said they had arranged to meet someone in the 1200 block of Camp Meade Road nearby in order to purchase a dirt bike advertised in a Craigslist posting.

One of the two victims said he had knocked on the door of the home they were directed to. When no one answered the door after several minutes, the victims said they saw two suspects walking toward them from a wooded area close by.

They said one of the suspects was seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a mask covering his face, and was armed with a handgun. The second suspect was also wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

As the victims were attempting to flee the area in their vehicle, they heard a gun shot, then saw the suspects running into the same wooded area they came from.

The victims said drove out of the area and went to the school nearby, where they waited for officers to arrive. An investigation revealed a single bullet hole in the rear of their vehicle.

Responding officers along with K-9 units canvassed the area for the suspects with negative results.

Both suspects were described as black males, between 5'5" to 5'7", weighing 140-160 pounds and wearing black hooded sweatshirts. One suspect wore a black mask over his face.

Police said, since the incident, detectives have been working leads to try and identify a suspect. They believe this case to be related to another recent case involving a similar situation.

The other incident police believe may be connected took place on Saturday, May 3. An officer said he was approached by a citizen who reported he had been robbed at gunpoint approximately 20 to 30 minutes earlier.

The 24-year-old male victim said he went to an address in the 1800 block of Oriole Court in Severn to purchase a dirt bike that was advertised on Craigslist for sale at approximately 4:50 p.m.

Once at the address, the victim said he saw four suspects standing nearby, and that two of the four suspects approached him before he was able to knock on the door of the address.

The first suspect reportedly pointed a two-tone black and silver handgun at the victim, while the second suspect demanded everything out of his pockets. The victim said both suspects had on ski masks.

The victim said he gave the suspects cash, a cell phone and other personal items, and said the third and fourth suspects acted as lookouts during the robbery.

The victim then ran to his vehicle, and all four suspects fled on foot.

Police said an investigation revealed the address on Oriole Court where the dirt bike was listed for sale was a vacant home.

There were no injuries to the victim in the May 3 robbery. The area was canvassed for the suspects, with negative results.

The four suspects were all described as black males in their late teens.
