SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) - It’s a Thanksgiving Day tragedy for one emotional family, now grieving the loss of a 56-year-old construction worker who died Thursday morning at a job site in Silver Spring.
Police responded to a Townhouse development near Poplar Run Drive in Montgomery County Thursday morning.
"He'd fallen in a very strange and freak accident," explains Lt. Michael Hartnett. "It appears he was a construction worker here doing some work, walked in, and slipped on a patch of ice. Only about two feet worth of ice, and he fell and struck his head."
"They got ice on the floor, it's slippery, I don't know if he was carrying something or not but he hit his face on the concrete," says Antonio Manuel. who was among the handful of people working on a number of unfinished townhomes this morning when the accident happened to his co-worker.
He describes the victim as a carpenter, working inside the first floor. This afternoon, ice was still visible in the spot where the man died.
Police say it doesn’t appear that he was carrying anything, and a hard hat was found near the man’s body.
The man’s family did not speak to reporters here at the scene. Maryland OSHA will investigate the accident, and the medical examiner will do an autopsy, but police are saying there are no signs of foul play.
