Some driver say signs on Interstate 66 point to an exit that has been closed for weeks, confusing drivers and creating potential traffic risks.
The access from the left lane of eastbound I-66 onto northbound I-495 has been closed for a few weeks. However, overhead signs point to a left exit, confusing drivers like Patty Shields.
"I don't know which way to go," Shields says.
Shields says she encountered the problem driving home late Sunday evening. "I tried to stay in the middle and hope for the best and hope I could get over. I needed to at the last second, which is what I had to do," she says.
The only way to get on I-495 is a right exit, but motorists say the markings make it difficult to navigate in an area usually jammed with traffic and hot lane construction.
A variable message board states the left exit to I-495 is closed and directs drivers to the right exit but the information on the board changes when the HOV lanes are open to traffic.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has been working to keep up with the changes to the roadways and the signs as the hot lane construction progresses but many who use I-66 say this road is already difficult to drive with the tight lanes and congested conditions.
Motorist William Conley says driving in that area is challenging enough with the HOT lane construction, not having updated signs could make it dangerous. "It's confusing so it could cause a lot of problems, a lot of slow down and possibly some accidents," Conley said.
