D.C. police officer Samson Lawrence III, charged with trying to kill his wife, goes on trial

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJLA/AP) - A D.C. police officer charged with trying to kill his wife went on trial in Prince George's County on Tuesday.

Samson Lawrence III faces multiple charges including attempted murder.

Prosecutors say that on Nov. 24, 2013, Lawrence was attempting to hang a projection television at his home in Accokeek when he became angry with his wife because she said she didn't know where the screws to hang the projector were.

In sometimes tearful testimony Tuesday, Betty Lawrence recounted how her husband grabbed a can of Lysol and sprayed it in her face before beating her with a metal light post and then threatening her with knives when she tried to call 911.

The couple had been married for 20 years at the time of the attack and close friends of Samson Lawrence say they find the accusations against him hard to fathom.

"He's always take care of his family and I've never known him to hurt a fly," said Delmus Luther. "He's got 20 some years of service on the police department. We're like brothers, we grew up together and i just don't believe it."
