Safeway, Giant strike averted after tentative agreement

Two major grocery chains with stores throughout the D.C. area came to new contract agreement with their employees Thursday, averting a strike that could have started as early as Sunday, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The president of the union, Tom McNutt, told the Washington Business Journal in a statement that the contract includes increases in wages and better health and retirement benefits.
