Rockville Pike water main break floods street, forces closure

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - A 16-inch water main break in Montgomery County flooded Rockville Pike Friday morning, forcing county police to close portions of the major thoroughfare.

The rupture combined with frigid temperatures quickly froze much of the flowing water into a sheet of ice along the 11200 block of Rockville Pike, near the White Flint Mall.

The rupture, which occurred at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, caused delays through much of the morning rush hour. Police had earlier closed the Pike in both directions between Edson Lane and Flanders Avenue, but reopened northbound lanes a few hours later.
