A Carroll County man whose family described him as a "great man" and a veteran of the Maryland State Police force was one of the 12 killed at the Navy Yard on Monday.
Richard "Mike" Ridgell was working as a security guard at the Washington Navy Yard when he was killed in Monday morning's shooting. His family told WJZ that they believe the 52-year-old husband and father was helping others get to safety when he was struck down.
"I don't think he would've just sat there and done nothing," his daughter, Megan, told WJZ.
Before beginning work at the Navy Yard, Ridgell spent 18 years with Maryland State Police.
An avid photographer, family members told the Washington Post that the Brooklyn, Md. native always seemed to have a camera in his hand.
"He was always the cool dad," Maddi Ridgell told the Post. "Everyone who met him fell in love with him."
