WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Police say a U.S. congresswoman was attacked and robbed Tuesday night near Eastern Market.

Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., who represents the 6th congressional district in Queens, was walking home from dinner Tuesday night when she was struck in the back of the head.

It happened at 2nd and Independence Avenue SE around 8:30 p.m.

The suspect took her Gucci tote bag and ran off, police say.{ }

Rep. Meng was left disoriented with several injuries, according to police. She also had a head injury and was transported to George Washington University Hospital.

Rep. Meng was able to return to work Wednesday, her office said.

“While this was a frightening ordeal, I fortunately was not seriously injured,” Rep. Meng said Wednesday. “Obviously, things could have been much worse."

U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police are investigating.{ }
