      Shadonna Jackson, 29, and Lakisha Smith, 30, have been together for five years and have always planned to get married—and now they can in Maryland.

      Jackson, an artist, and Smith, a program analyst, built their own website ahead of Election Day—asking family and friends to voice their opinions on Maryland’s Question 6.

      “We have people who we love and who love us but we weren't sure how they felt about us getting married,” Smith said.

      Armed with overwhelming support they say they watched the election returns Tuesday night.

      When the results came in, the couple, who grew up in Prince George's County and faced discrimination, almost didn't believe it.

      "For us, I think it took an hour for in to sink in," Jackson said.

      "It was kinda surreal—did this really happen?” Smith said.

      About 52 percent of Marylanders voted in favor of Question 6. The decision made history—with Maryalnd becoming one of the two states where same-sex marriage was approved by popular vote. But, it was a narrow margin—leaving the couple firmly aware that challenges still lay ahead.

      “But I am encouraged by the fact that we as a couple have been able to impact individuals,” Smith said.

      Though the couple is excited about the passing of Question 6, they are keeping the wedding date a secret.{ }{ }
