Prince William County School Board chairman resigns

The chairman of the Prince William County School Board resigned suddenly Wednesday.

Ryan Sawyers announced his resignation in a letter Wednesday posted on his Facebook page.

Sawyers did not specifically state what led to his decision to resign in his letter. He did not respond when asked for comment.

As the chairman of the school board, Sawyers was also the rare Democratic Party officeholder in Prince William County.

Friends and political allies told the 7 on Your Side I-Team that they were surprised at the suddenness of the resignation. Sawyers had been running for Congress in Virginia’s 1st District before suspending his campaign last week.

Last month, the I-Team spoke to Sawyers when he called on Prince William County superintendent Steven Walts to resign. He believed Walts concealed the extent of the car crash, which occurred while driving a county-owned car.
