A Prince William County Police motorcycle officer was killed Monday afternoon after he was involved in a vehicle crash with a minivan in Bristow.
The officer is identified as Chris Yung, 35, a seven-year veteran of the department.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. near Nokesville Road and Piper Lane. Police say the minivan was turning left into a shopping center in front of Yung, who was driving southbound on Nokesville Road.
Yung was responding to a separate accident and had his emergency lights and siren on.
Two off-duty members of the Fairfax County Department of Fire and Rescue and two other citizens pulled Yung from the fiery scene and started CPR. He was taken to an area hospital and later died.
At the time of the crash, the traffic signal for Nokesville Road at the intersection was green. The 69-year-old driver and her 47-year-old passenger in the Dodge Caravan were not injured.
This is the department's third line of duty death since its founding in 1970.
Yung served in the United States Marine Corps. He was currently assigned to the department's traffic unit as a motorcycle officer. He leaves a wife and three children.
As of Tuesday afternoon no charges had been filed. The investigation continues.
A candlelight vigil for Officer Yung will be held Tuesday evening in Bristow in the Target parking lot in Sowder Village Square. It starts at 7:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend. People are asked to bring their own candles.
