Prince George's County substitute teacher, basketball coach charged with child porn

Christopher Speights. (PGPD)

A man who had been working as a substitute teacher and basketball coach at an elementary school in Prince George's County has been arrested and charged with distribution and possession of child pornography, Maryland State Police said Thursday.

Christopher Speights, 34, of Capitol Heights, has been charged with three counts of distribution of child pornography and six counts of possession of child pornography. Police say Speights had been working as a substitute teacher and basketball coach at Bradbury Heights Elementary School and possibly as a basketball coach with South County Sports Academy.

Prince George's County Public Schools issued this statement on Speights:

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is aware that substitute teacher Christopher Speights has been arrested. We will cooperate fully with law enforcement in its investigation. Due to the nature of the claims, Christopher Speights will no longer serve the school district.
Any behavior that brings harm to a child will not be tolerated in any way in PGCPS. Over the past year, we have made significant changes to increase student safety and remain committed to ensuring a quality education in a safe environment for all students.

Investigators on the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit started tracking a person who was distributing child porn photos and videos on the internet back in December. Police say that person turned out to be Speights, and they say when they searched his home they found "several electronic devices" that were used to store those photos and videos.

A bond review was scheduled for Friday at 1:15 p.m.

Police say additional charges could be filed and they are asking anyone with information on the case to call 410-953-8272.
