Prince George's Co. officer convicted for assaulting homeless woman, faces up to 10 years

A Prince George's County police officer faces up to ten years in prison after being convicted for assaulting a homeless woman last year, county officials announced Tuesday.

Officer George Merkel has been released on bond until sentencing, according to officials.

According to Prince George's County officials, Corporal Merkel was on patrol in September 2016 when he saw a homeless woman sleeping outside of a vacant store in Lanham. Merkel reportedly called other officers to the scene, and when two officer arrived on the scene, they say they saw Merkel cursing at the homeless woman, pulling her by her ears to stand up and hitting her.

Merkel's sentencing is set for January 5, 2018.
