Prince George's County Art in Public Places and radio station WPGC are sponsoring a mural competition for area artists with a chance of winning $1,000.
Artists are asked to submit their name for a random lottery. Fifty random finalists will be selected on Monday, October 1. Competitors will then submit a .jpeg of their proposed mural.
By October 20, a brick wall in Suitland will be transformed by a local artist's work.
"This a very special opportunity because it's not just an artist going out and painting a mural," says Samantha Vernon, program administrator, Arts in Public Places. "It's an artist painting a mural with members of the community."
Jordan Shackelford, a Bowie resident, will be one of the entrants.
He was born and raised in Prince George's County. Now, he lives and works here as a professional artist.
"I've made it my mission to beautify this community," Shackelford says in his Hyattsville studio. "When the community comes out and actually engages, and you see families together, that's a feeling you can't really describe. I plan on doing this forever."
