(WJLA) - Prince George's County Public Schools is considering closing an elementary school in District Heights by next year.
The school system has announced it has applied for a state grant and will close Thomas Claggett Elementary School in Montgomery County at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year if the request is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Clagett is being targeted due to its low enrollment and poor performance, according to the Washington Post. The proposed closure is part of a School Improvement Grant program which provides funding to the school system that would allow students to be moved to other schools in the district.
Clagett would be the first school in the county to close in about five years.
