Prince George's County police have detained a suspect allegedly connected to a Saturday homicide in Berwyn Heights.
Police say the suspect, 36-year-old Andrew Kugler, tried to commit suicide when police attempted to take him into custody. He is currently recovering from a self-inflicted wound.
Kugler is accused of killing Amber Schinault. Her body was discovered in the basement of her Berwyn Heights home Sunday afternoon with her throat slashed.
Schinault was first on ABC7 last December when her Yorkie "Molly" was kidnapped. At her side was her then-boyfriend Kugler.
Neighbor Sam Khadra can't believe it happened right across the street.
"It is strange, especially here," Khadra says. "We get break-ins - you hear about that. But murder? No this is the first time."
Friends and neighbors describe a fight the couple had outside the home in May, it led to a June protective order against Kugler.
A friend told ABC7 news she'd spoken to the suspect before the murder, saying he seemed despondent and lonely. Sunday, she says he called her to thank her and her husband for their friendship.
Kugler is charged with second degree murder and is being held on no bond.
