CLINTON, Md. (WJLA) - The owners of the Woodyard Road Nursery in Clinton are cleaning up this morning after a car crashed into their building late Tuesday night, and the woman behind the wheel is facing multiple charges.
The car crashed into the garage at about 11:30 p.m., igniting the structure and trapping the driver inside the vehicle. Firefighters arrived before midnight and managed to remove the female driver of the vehicle and extinguish the fire from the car and the building.
Prince George's County Police say that Stacey Porter, a 44-year-old Southeast D.C. woman, has been charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding police another traffic offenses in connection to the crash.
The pursuit of Porter began just before 11:30 p.m. after officers spotted her fleeing from the scene of an alleged armed robbery at a convenience store on Fox Run Drive in Clinton. Officers attempted to stop her several times, but each time Porter appeared to be ready to stop, she sped off again.
Porter then lost control over her car while trying to make a turn and crashed into the house. Her car caught fire a short time after the crash; police officers were able to remove her from the car and extinguish the flames.
She suffered facial and ankle injuries in the crash, which were treated at a nearby hospital.
The owners of the daycare said they had no idea about the crash and fire until they heard about it on the news Wednesday morning. They say the facility will be closed Wednesday, and possibly for several more days. They have about 50 children who attend the daycare weekly.
