LAUREL, Md. (WJLA) - Three car accidents in Prince George's County claimed two lives overnight and left a third victim in critical condition.
The first crash occurred late Wednesday night in the 8600 block of Contee Road in Laurel. Two vehicles collided violently enough to eject one driver out of his car and trap the other driver inside the vehicle. Maurice Michael Barnes, 32, died at an area hospital. A female victim was also taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. There were no passengers in either car.
Police say Barnes was driving westbound on Contee Road and, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line and struck a vehicle head on. Speed appears to be a factor.
A second crash happened just outside the District in Mt. Rainier, Md., at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and 38th Street. The adult male victim of the single-car accident was taken to a hospital but did not survive.
The third, non-fatal crash, occurred along the 5900 block of St. Barnabas Road in Oxon Hill, Md., near the entrance to the Capital Beltway. The victim, a pedestrian, was struck by a vehicle and then transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Police said the driver remained on the scene following the crash.
