(WJLA) - For 20 years, Ruthanne Lodato taught for "Music Together Alexandria" out of a church in Alexandria's Del Ray neighborhood.

"Great family, really well-known in Alexandria, it's just shocking!" says nearby resident Tom Waters.

Neighbors say Lodato was a mother of three and lived in a home with her husband and elderly mother. According to police, a man knocked on their door in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive on Thursday afternoon, and when the door opened, he shot both Ruthanne Lodato, 59, and her mother's caregiver before fleeing.

A helicopter rushed Lodato to the hospital, but she died from her injuries. Police say the caretaker has non life-threatening injuries and will survive.

Nearby residents describe the area as a “nice neighborhood” and are stunned. The shooting has left them on edge. Despite a massive manhunt, the suspect has not yet been found.

"This street probably has not had a violent crime in the history of its existence, because I grew up right on the corner here," says Robert Beck.

The suspect is being described as an older white man, balding, with grey hair and a beard.
