A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting outside a recreation center in D.C. Tuesday evening.

Witnesses said the woman who was shot and killed refused to put down a gun after the officers yelled at her to drop the weapon.

According to investigators, it all started when the woman crashed a sedan outside the Bald Eagle Recreation Center around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

“I said, ‘The woman got a gun. I got to go,'” said Jerome Duram, who was playing with his kids on the recreations center’s playground.

Duram told ABC7 News that he called 911 right after the crash.

“I don’t know if she was going to shoot the police or whatever, but I heard about five shots after that,” said Duram.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said his officers received a call about the crash first, then reports the woman was possibly carrying a handgun.

“You know, you may come across one person who has one version [of what happened],” said Chief Newsham. “There may be another person who has another version. We want to make sure we do a comprehensive investigation, talk to everybody, and then determine what happened.”

It’s not clear how many times or where the woman was shot before she was killed. It’s also not clear what led up to the crash.

Chief Newsham gave a full press conference on the shooting below.
