WASHINGTON (WJLA) – Metropolitan Police are searching for the man who attempted to sexually assault a woman while armed in Northwest D.C. on Sunday night.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 31, a woman was in the area of Oliver Street NW and Western Avenue NW when a tall black man in his 30s approached her and displayed a knife, according to police. The man unsuccessfully attempted to remove the woman’s clothing and she was able to flee.

Residents of the upscale area—which is home to four churches—were shocked to learn of the crime. They say the attack has them worried about being out late at night.

“I always thought this neighborhood was safe, so it’s a shock to me and it’s scary, too,” said bus passenger Catherine Thomas.

“This is the first time I’ve heard of a person being assaulted on the street,” said neighbor Phil Wakelyn.

Police say the attacker has a dark complexion and wore a dark hat, one black shoe, one white shoe, dark gloves, a white long-sleeved button-down shirt and dark pants.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099 or send a text message to 50411. D.C. Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
