Police search for Bryant Lewis, accused of killing Brendan Munnerlyn in Md. hit-and-run crash

BRANDYWINE, Md. (WJLA) – Prince George’s County Police are searching for a 23-year-old man named Bryant Christopher Lewis in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a young Waldorf football star last week.

Brendan Munnerlyn, the 24-year-old who was killed in the crash, had a promising future ahead of him, but his dreams died in the accident on Thursday, July 17. Now, his family is trying to understand how someone could have left him on the side of the road to die.

Police say 23-year-old Lewis, who faces multiple charges, was driving a stolen vehicle on the night in question. He may have been speeding when he lost control of the car, skidded off the road and struck a utility pole on McKendree Road in Brandywine. Then, Lewis took off running, leaving a critically-injured passenger in the back seat. Munnerlyn, who had been riding in the front passenger’s seat, was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries.

Munnerlyn’s family doesn’t understand how Lewis could have left him there to die.

“I thought that was the worst—that was a coward,” said Munnerlyn’s mother, Beverly Legrant. “That was the craziest thing that you could ever do to someone that you even wanted to make an acquaintance, just be around.”

“I just don’t think that was right,” said Munnerlyn’s brother, Bryan Brooks. “If you’re supposed to be friends … no matter what.”

Legrant says Lewis is the coworker of a family friend, someone her son had recently met. Lewis was driving her son and another friend to a party the night Munnerlyn died.

What’s even more tragic is that Munnerlyn was at a high point in his life; he had been a football star in high school and college, and entered the 2014 NFL Draft, hoping to get picked up by a team.

“On top of that, he had just turned his life over to Christ; he was recently baptized,” Legrant said. “He was living his dream … it just all got taken away, in an instant.”

There is a warrant for Lewis’ arrest. Police believe he may be driving a dark-colored Mercedes. Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call Prince George’s County Police.

The other passenger injured in last week’s accident is still in the hospital with serious injuries.

Funeral services will be held for Munnerlyn in Waldorf on Tuesday.
