A Maryland State Trooper was taken to the hospital after he had to jump over a jersey wall to safety after cars crashed into his police car and a SUV he was stopping in Forestville, Sunday morning.

Maryland State Police say that Trooper First Class. Okafor was performing a traffic stop on Johnnie Mae Jones Philson, 56, in her Toyota Highlander on Interstate 495 at Allentown Road. At around 3:23 a.m., police say Okafor was guiding Philson's SUV to the shoulder when a Honda Accord driven by Aisha Fatima, 27, hit the driver's side of the SUV.

Police say Okafor got out to check on Philson and then called emergency crews to the scene.

While Okafor was walking back to his car, he saw a Buick driven by Linwood Levi Watkins, 43, driving in his direction, according to authorities. That's when Okafor jumped over the jersey wall and the Buick crashed into his police car and forced it into Philson's SUV.

Philson was taken to Prince George's County Hospital with minor injuries while Okafor and Fatima were both taken to Southern Maryland Hospital, also with minor injuries.

Watkins has been charged with failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
