An 18-year-old man was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the shooting death of 16-year-old Taiyania Thompson who was shot in an apartment near Gallaudet University on Thursday and died the following Sunday, January 28, authorities said.

According to police, Dekale Bowman, of Northeast Washington, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

ABC7's Stephen Tschida reports that Thompson was possibly killed while posing with guns for social media.

Thompson was found by police on a couch in the living room of an apartment at 1060 Mt. Olivet Road NE. She had been shot in the face below her right eye near her cheekbone, according to court documents.

A person referred to as Witness-5 (W-5) was interviewed by police and said the man he knew as “Sean” or “Kale” called after the shooting saying he needed help because he was in a “jam.” W-5 said he picked up “Sean” in the 1500 block of East Capitol Street SE between 3 and 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 25. Police say "Sean" or "Kale" is the defendant, Dekale Bowman.

“Sean” told W-5 it was not supposed to happen. “That’s my bitch. And I love her. I did not mean to do it.”

“Sean” told W-5 that he and Thompson were fooling around and had their guns pointed at each other, and “Pow,” it just went off.

“He called and stated he was in a bad spot and needed some help,” W-5 told police. “When he got into [the vehicle], he broke down. Later, he told me that while on social media playing with a gun and the gun accidentally went off.”

Referring to his gun, “Sean” told W-5, “It’s probably in a river,” or words to that effect, according to the affidavit.

Police say preliminary information suggests the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute, but Thompson's grandmother tells ABC7 she doesn't know who he is or how her granddaughter knew him.

Following the shooting, police were initially searching for a white Kia Sorento SUV with Maryland tag of 1DD2833 with possible front-end damage.
