Police investigate sexual attack, robbery in NW neighborhood
A vicious sexual assault at gunpoint has sent shock waves through a Northwest D.C. neighborhood.
The crime happened about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of Q Street NW, a street which is well lit and has a lot of foot traffic.
A man put a gun to a woman's back and forced her into an alley. He sexually assaulted her and robbed her.
The attack took place just feet from Mujesira Budic's apartment.
"I thought it was mostly drug dealings and things of that nature," Budic said. "To find out about a woman being raped outside of my window is extremely discomforting."
Laura Kezman was also walking in the area about 11 p.m. She said she is now re-thinking her routines and not taking her safety for granted.
"It completely freaks me out," Kezman said. "I think that what I'm doing right now--listening to my iPod at night with headphones on--is not a good idea."
Resident Brynne Mason comes through the area every night and tries to ride a bike whenever possible to avoid falling victim.
"It's dangerous definitely at night," Mason said. "It's not safe really to be walking around by yourself in the dark."
Police are looking into whether the incident is related to any other sexual assaults.
"We want to alert that area of that crime so they can take precautions and be aware of their surroundings," said D.C. Police Commander George Kucik.
