(WJLA) - Prince George's County Police have made three arrests in connection with a fatal stabbing on the Northwest Branch Trail last weekend.
The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Akinleye Warner of Langley Park. He is reportedly from Guyana and moved to the U.S. with his father.
Police said Warner traveled to the park with three acquaintances who went to the area to conduct a drug deal. During the attempted transaction, Warner was stabbed. He was found on a park trail suffering from multiple stab wounds.
"The investigation reveals the suspects are gang members who committed the crime in order to gain notoriety within the gang," police said Thursday.
Police said Thursday they have arrested and charged three current and former Buck Lodge Middle students with first-degree murder;15-year old Nelson Rivera-Anaya dropped out last month, but 14-year-old Angel Contreras is a current student, as is an unnamed 13-year-old who is too young to be named and charged as an adult.
"I'm in shock," says Mirian Aquino, who cannot believe her son Roberto's classmates are accused of killing a 19-year-old. "I couldn't believe that it's coming from middle school. I mean, just to be in a gang and things like that, it's really getting out of hand."
"Es mi familia," says Manuel, the uncle of the accused 13-year-old. He says he doesn't believe his nephew was the one who actually stabbed victim Akinleye Warner.
Rivera-Anaya & Contreras are currently being held at the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status. The 13-year-old is being held at the Cheltenham Youth Facility.
