Pipe bomb reportedly explodes on police SUV in Maryland, authorities investigating
THURMONT, Md. (ABC7) —
Someone placed a pipe bomb on the hood of a police cruiser in a Thurmont neighborhood.
The bomb exploded just 20 minutes or so after the officer parked it in front of his home and went inside. Police say the blast shook the entire neighborhood shortly after midnight.
Investigators from Thurmont police, fire department and ATF are currently investigating. The police chief says he knows of no reason why anyone would target the officer who had been driving the police cruiser that was bombed.
Meanwhile, some in this community wonder whether there could be a connection to recent violent incidents involving law-enforcement officers across the country.
No one was hurt, but the pipe bomb went off with such force that it could have inflicted serious injury.
Fire department and the ATF spent the day scouring the damaged vehicle. They are looking for clues to lead them to whoever is responsible for the bomb.
Police and some residents of the community say they are worried about the possibility of this happening again.
