P.G. County Corporal indicted for allegedly assaulting homeless woman while on patrol

Prince George's County Corporal George Merkel has been indicted for allegedly assaulting a homeless woman while on patrol, authorities announced Thursday.

According to Prince George's County officials, Corporal Merkel was on patrol in September 2016 when he saw a homeless woman sleeping outside of a vacant store in Lanham. Merkel reportedly called other officers to the scene, and when two officer arrived on the scene, they say they saw Merkel "yelling and shouting expletives" at the homeless woman.

Police say Merkel then "pulled the victim to her feet by her ears and struck her on the side of the head with an open hand."

The two officers who arrived on the scene reported the incident, according to authorities.

The announcement comes on the same day that Prince George's County officials announced the indictment of a second officer, in an unrelated incident, for alleged solicitation of prostitution and for allegedly telling a prostitute where officers were conducting stings.
