(WJLA) - A violent shootout in a Southeast Washington neighborhood has left a 27-year-old man dead, suspects on the loose and a neighborhood on alert.
The shooting happened at about 3:23 a.m. in the 5000 block of Bass Place SE, MPD officials say. The victim, Tyree Beysean Miller, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Miller had been shot several times when he was found in the street near Naille Elementary School. Authorities have no one in custody, nor have they released their thoughts on a motive.
"It was like a firefight out there," nearby resident Mike Coleman said. "I was basically half asleep, and then it went off. I just rolled over and hit the floor because I didn't want to get hit by a stray round."
Authorities say that as many as 25 shots were fired by an unknown number of weapons. A gun that had run out of bullets was found on the ground next to Miller's body.
Residents of the neighborhood say that once night falls, the area turns into a drug spot. However, they've never endured anything like this.
One of them, Karla Williams, returned home from her overnight shift to find her children terrified.
"I'm thinking about moving," she said.
