27-year-old dead after car crashes into telephone pole on Benning Rd.

A man is dead after his car crashed into a telephone pole on Benning Road in Northeast DC early Friday morning, police say.

Deandre Hamlin of Southeast DC was 27 years old.

According to DC police, Hamlin, who was driving a black Mercury Grand Marquis, was driving westbound on Benning Road "at a high rate of speed" when he crashed into the pole. When police arrived at the scene, they say Hamlin was dead .

Following the crash, DC police announced that Benning Road was closed in both directions from Minnesota Avenue Northeast to Oklahoma Avenue Northeast.

At around 6:30 a.m., the Eastbound lanes on Benning Road were reopened, but Westbound remained closed.
