ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) - Residents of a quiet portion of Old Town Alexandria remain stunned after their neighborhood grocery store was the site of an armed robbery attempt Sunday night.
The Safeway on South Royal might as well be called the Old Town Community Center.
"We all love this place and depend on it. We love the people that work here," said Alexandria resident Fred Huntington.
And it's that feeling of closeness that makes the crime even more unsettling.
On Sunday night at about 8:30 p.m., three masked men entered the store with guns drawn, demanding money. About 20 customers and workers were inside at the time.
Before the men got away with cash, a gun was fired - according to Crystal Nosal with the Alexandria Police Department.
The bullet grazed a male customer, who was later treated and released from the hospital. After the suspects took off, Alexandria Police scoured the area while a Park Police helicopter hovered above.
But the men ended up getting away.
"This type of crime is very unusual for the neighborhood and for a Sunday evening," said Nosal.
Security cameras did manage to capture the incident, and police are closely reviewing the footage. Meanwhile, Old Town neighbors like Susan Kerr still can't believe this happened here.
"I feel like I'm on this little island of safety, and obviously the island got disturbed last night," she said.
Authorities have no description of the suspects other than that they were masked. There's no official word to how much money the suspects got away with.
