Officials: Tacks found on W&OD trail, believed to have flattened cyclists' tires
HERNDON, Va. (ABC7) —
Kit Case often rides the W&OD trail, but this week the avid cyclist faced a new problem.
"I was on the way back between here and Route 28 and heard the clicking noise as the tack was embedded in the wheel," Case told ABC7 Wednesday.
Case was one of many cyclists who were left with a flat tire after dozens of tacks were found along a nearly four mile stretch of the popular trail.
"Within the span of about two hours we had six," said Green Lizard Bike Shop Owner Beth Meyer.
Meyer says Sunday morning she had riders waiting for new tires before her shop even opened. When rider after rider came in with the same issue she became concerned it was more than just a prank or accident.
"Someone trying to disable a bike to turn someone into a victim while trying to change a tire dusk and dawn and alone," said Meyer.
Trail officials were contacted and combed the trail with a large magnet and pulled up dozens of tacks.
Officials have been back checking the trail every day, but haven't found any additional tacks.
