Five University of Maryland students lost their home in a fire early Friday morning, and two firefighters were injured, according to officials.

According to officials, the firefighters sustained injures that were not life-threatening.

Investigators say the house located at 6700 Baltimore Avenue in Hyattsville, sustained an estimated $175 thousand in damages.

Daniela Toni lived there with four other housemates.

“It’s like nothing. It’s just ruins… and like springs,” she described. “I didn’t expect it to be this bad. I thought some things would be intact.”

The sophomore studying Architecture was at the library when the fire started. Her neighbors were asleep.

“You’re like what’s going on and you rush out the house,” Celeste Luster said. “The neighbors were outside crying and that’s when we called 9-1-1.”

The cause of the fire was undetermined by late Friday morning but officials said an ongoing investigation remained active.
