      U.S. Park Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer at Hains Point in East Potomac Park in Southwest.

      Sgt. David Schlosser says an officer shot a suspect near The Awakening statue shortly{}before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. He says the officer was patrolling the park, which closes at 1 a.m.,{}when he{}noticed a man sitting in a car{}with a gun in his hand.

      "It's a potential loss of life situation for the officers and also anybody else that may be in the area and because of this deadly force is typically a prudent course of action," Schlosser said.

      The officer commanded the man to drop his gun, but the man ignored him. The man got out of his car and the officer, again, ordered the man to drop his weapon, but the man did not.{}

      The officer, fearing for his life, then shot the man. Police say{}the{}man never fired at the officer. He{}was{}flown to Medstar with serious but non-life threatening{}injuries.

      Hains Point{}remains closed while police conduct an investigation.
