Tourism officials say that dreary, often rainy weather has kept visitors away from Ocean City in droves throughout the summer, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Officials tell the Sun that the number of visitors to the Maryland resort destination has fallen year-over-year in nine of the past 12 weeks. In one example, Ocean City saw a drop in tourism of 23.5 percent in one week of June versus the same week in 2012.
The National Weather Service says that the area saw about 10 inches of rain in June, which is a record; on top of that, Ocean City saw a deluge on Aug. 1 that kept people away for days after flooding inundated the city.
"We had a slow start to summer that was attributed to the weather," a city spokesman told the Sun.
