Tuesday is the first day of school for many public school students across Virginia.
Classrooms will be full again today in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, as well as in the city of Manassas.
In Fairfax County, the state's largest school system, seven schools will take part in a pilot program to eliminate regular soda from vending machines that serve after-school activities. Regular soda is already not allowed across the county in vending machines that are used during the school day.
Fairfax is also the first county to adopt the "heads up" football program, designed to mitigate the risk of injury, especially head injuries. Each team will also have a designated safety coach beginning this season.
