Employees who worked in Building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard, the site of the Sept. 16 shooting, have been told not to expect to be able to return.
In a message posted to the Naval Sea Systems Command Facebook page, an official said that the agency's headquarters remains an active FBI crime scene.
Building 197 also suffered major damage during the shooting, during which an ex-Navy reservist shot and killed 12 people.
Officials say that they're working on securing a contract to pack out cubicles and remaining personal items to a space inside the old Coast Guard headquarters.
Once the FBI turns the building over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the agency will collect personal effects and computers and return them to workers.
